How Many T-Shirts Should I Order for My First Clothing Drop?

For your first clothing drop, it's usually better to start with a sensible quantity and sell through than order hundreds of T-shirts you can't shift. There isn't one perfect number, but your first order should be based on your audience, budget, number of designs and how confident you are that they'll sell.

Start small and learn what sells

Your first drop gives you valuable information. You'll find out which designs people prefer, which colours sell and, importantly, which sizes you need more of. If you're launching a completely new brand without an existing audience, a smaller first run can help keep the risk manageable. You can then use what you've learned when ordering your next collection. If you already have an audience, pre-orders or strong demand for the product, you may be comfortable starting with a larger quantity.

Don't spread yourself too thin

One common mistake is trying to launch too many designs, colours and garment options at once. If you order 100 T-shirts but split them across five designs, three colours and multiple sizes, you suddenly have very little stock of each variation. A smaller, more focused collection can make it easier to manage stock and gives each design a better chance to make an impact.

Think carefully about sizes

You probably don't want to order the same quantity of every size. Your ideal size split will depend on your audience and the fit of the garment. An oversized streetwear T-shirt, for example, may sell very differently from a standard-fit tee. This is another reason why choosing the garment before deciding quantities is important.

Your printing method matters too

Quantity can also influence how your T-shirts are produced. For some designs and larger runs, screen printing may be the most suitable and cost-effective option. For smaller runs or detailed, full-colour designs, DTF printing may make more sense. At Vektor, we can look at the garment, artwork and quantities together and recommend the best approach rather than treating each decision separately.

Not sure how many to order?

If it's your first clothing drop, you don't need to have everything figured out before speaking to us. Tell us about your brand, what you're looking to produce and how you're planning to sell it. We'll work with you to choose the garments, quantities and production method that make sense for your first drop — and give you something you can build on for the next one.
